Chinese New Year, Chinese Immigrants and more...

Chinese throughout the world have just completed their celebration of their New Year.  Many neighborhood homes are visited to show friendship.  PRAY that the seed/Word sown by many churches, groups and individuals will germinate into many conversions who will demonstrate their faith by baptism and identification with a local church.

Chinese Immigrants
There are many homogeneous groups of people who move from their homeland to another country normally to find work.  They are known as the "Chinese Immigrants."  Taiwan is no exception.  There are many Indonesians, Vietnamese, Thais and Filipinos who have come to work in Taiwan's factories, construction sites, building projects, hospitals and in homes.  Ron and Shelby, SEND missionaries in Chiayi, have a special burden for these people groups.  They give these requests related to the Diaspora:
1] During Chinese New Year forty-five Thai workers accepted Christ at a TECC supported Thai Bible camp attended by 230 workers.  Prayer is needed for follow-up and training these converts. Especially SEND is looking for workers to assist this ministry. Also during Chinese New Year Rita Chen who is ministering the Vietnamese in Taichung in her church plant experienced the LORDs power in conversions of Vietnamese.
2] There are two or three Filipino fellowships/church-denominations with more than 300 churches /fellowships spread throughout most of the larger cities of Taiwan and also in country side.  Over two hundred are baptized every year.  The Logos World Mission was born in Taiwan and has since planted churches in ten countries overseas.  Our partner mission [SEND International] assist Logos World Mission in their outreach.  Pray that God will keep His hand of blessing on this people group.
3] There are almost a quarter of a million foreign brides married to Taiwanese.  The government has some programs to help them integrate into society.  We try to help them with various needs especially in their need for legal advice.  Often their children have special educational and adjustment needs, because they can not assist their own children in learning the Chinese writing and themselves have not gone through it. In Chiayi we endeavor to help with their social needs and hopefully have opportunity to share the Gospel with them.  This ministry needs special prayer for wisdom and effectiveness.
4] Our burden is for a deeper involvement of the Taiwanese churches in the mission of foreigners employed in our country.  Praise God there is a vision to reach fellow Chinese all around the world.  Pray the vision for more cross-cultural ministries among Chinese churches is growing and allowed to expand.

The Crisis in Ukraine is driving people to Christ: Requesting urgent Prayer

Ukraine map
SEND has teams in four major areas of Ukraine and is developing church planting teams to work among some of  Ukraine’s unreached people groups. The missionaries work with Ukrainians to assist young churches and plant new ones as well as train church leaders and Ukrainian missionaries through Bible colleges and theological seminaries.
[Update from SEND Ukraine: d 3/10/14] – Please continue to pray for peace in Ukraine, especially concerning the situation in Crimea. The Crimean parliament voted on Thursday to join Russia and announced a public referendum next Sunday (March 16) to allow the people to decide whether or not to seek Russian annexation or simply increase the region’s autonomous status as part of Ukraine.  This is a critical week in the country’s history.
All of our workers are back in Ukraine, with the exception of those who serve in the south (and those who were already out of the country for other reasons).  Our people are experiencing no local threats, and ministry continues.  However, they are remaining at a high alert level, given the situation in Crimea and tensions in some eastern cities (where we have no workers).
Additional Information:
The 1990’s saw tremendous growth in the churches of Ukraine through mass evangelistic events. Today’s Ukraine needs missionaries prepared to share the gospel and disciple new believers through personal relationships. Major ministries include theological education, church planting, Bible studies, camping, children’s ministry, women’s ministry and teaching English (TESOL)The radio program “Faith, Hope, and Love” draws listeners from Ukraine, Russia, and other countries in the former Soviet Union.
Slavic Radchuk: Burning for the LORD: In the few days where he
was in Taiwan in 2013 he wanted to start a Ukrainian Church.
Ukraine is a powder keg ready to explode. Russia is keeping a tight grip on Crimea, and pro-Russia protests are spreading throughout Ukraine’s eastern and southern cities. But there’s good news: the crisis in Ukraine is driving people to Christ.
“During this difficult time, my radio program [is] going on, non stop. And people are very, very hungry, especially now,” says Slavik Radchuk. “People [are] still coming to Christ like never before, [in] all churches.”
“From Crimea, we have reports that former Muslims are coming to our churches and saying, ‘Can we pray together to God?’” says Radchuk. They don’t want to die without hope, he adds. “This is a very difficult time for us, and all people stay together now and pray to God for peace.” Over the weekend, thousands of people gathered at a church in Crimea and prayed through Monday morning. “ Missionaries said attendance was 1806 in one church, but over 2,000 people came and stayed,” Radchuk shares. “All night they prayed because it was a very difficult time in Crimea.” ).
In Taiwan we pray for our brethren in Ukraine. Also pray for the Chinese in Ukraine. Nothing has ever happened that did not pass God's throne first. May this become a time where Gods glory prevails  and the evil has to withdraw. SEND Ukraine reports "All of our workers are back in Ukraine, with the exception of those who serve in the south (and those who were already out of the country for other reasons).  Our people are experiencing no local threats, and ministry continues.

Because of an Indonesian - the whole family received Christ

There is an amazing story to praise the LORD, which almost accidentally happened in our neighborhood and is linked with the TECC ministry support among Indonesians in Taipei.
Since October a church in Beitou has opened its doors for bi-weekly Indonesian meetings on a Sunday afternoon. I regularly go there, bring Indonesian material, pray and sing with them and take the chance to learn some Indonesian. Ira, one of the four pretty regular attending old people nurses from Indonesia, last week experienced  how her 91 years old Agung passed away. Before he did something happened that gave the whole sad moment a complete different direction:
Suddenly both Agung and Ira saw a tall grown man at the bedsite, clothed in a white-shining outfit. Pastor Huang who himself was there told me at that moment Agung said to his Indonesian caretaker: "I see a part of heaven open right now. It is beautiful, I can not describe it. But if you change your faith we will meet there again." Soon afterwards he passed away. Ira really liked him but also understood, this was real, no matter how her background this was what she wanted. From our times she knew a bit about Jesus. At the spot she wanted become a Christian. When I saw her last Sunday she already had prayed publicaly to the living God for the sad family. I was told through her testimony she had convinced the rest of the still unbelieving family about the need to really turn to the living God and accept Jesus. She was too shy to tell me, but I just heard it from a TECC (Taiwan Expatriate Caring Committe)  brother who was attending the funeral. -
Ira was too sad to be so happy about this. She had lost the base of her staying in Taiwan. But the LORD within hours provided her with a new caring work in Taoyuan, also to an elderly man. Guess what, he is a Christian too! - A befriended pastor from TECC will take care of her until she is settled there. The LORD loves the small the neglected people and uses them to build HIS glory and HIS church.

Logos Hope canceled its scheduled book fair at Keelung Port

Actually, the invitations were already sent out churches contacted but then came this news in the China Post Sunday 1/6 editon:

TAIPEI--The Germany-registered passenger ship Logos Hope canceled its scheduled book fair at Keelung Port due to engine problems yesterday.

The book fair was slated to run from Jan. 7 through to Jan. 20, the organizers said earlier. The ship set sail for Taiwan from Hong Kong at around noon on Friday, Jan. 4 but ran into problems with the engine fuel and cooling systems 8 hours later.

The ship's skipper and senior officials of the organizers decided to turn the ship back to Hong Kong for safety reasons after engineers onboard failed to fix the problems, a spokesman of the trip said yesterday.
The ship and the 400 crew members onboard returned safely to Hong Kong yesterday noon. The organizers decided to cancel its Keelung event after repairmen in Hong Kong estimated fixing the boat will take at least 10 days to two weeks.

The organizers apologized to the public for the cancelation, the spokesman said.

Let'shope that they can do it at another time and bless Taiwan!

Japan: Tina Lin's Progress Reports: Plans for Kesennuma, Shizugawa, Ishinomaki and Higashimatsuyam,

News from , Tina Lin our SEND Taiwan missionary in Japan, who is also closely working with us in Taiwan in our Relief efforts with the Chinese Christian Relief Association, CCRA.

In her recent prayer letter she writes:
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Greetings eof peace!
From ‘cyan’ to ‘san’
Japanese often don’t call others directly by name, rather they add a prefix at the end of your family or given name (such as Tina-san or Lin-san), which is the basic form of respect. The prefix ‘cyan’ is used as a diminutive, to indicate a pet name, or in the case of an elder addressing someone younger (such as Tina-cyan or Lin-cyan). This is similar to the Chinese affectionately referring to someone as ‘little Lin’. However, if you refer to someone with whom you aren’t acquainted as Lin-cyan, it’s very impolite. Tourists from Taiwan often commit this social blunder, calling a bus driver ‘transport-cyan’, which is akin to saying, “Hey, you, driver!”.
In Japanese, the name for Christians is: Ku-ri-su-cyan, which includes the disrespectful and belittling character ‘cyan’ at the end. In terms of language sense, it carries has a bit of that impolite meaning to many Christians as well.
After the 3-11 earthquake, many Christian organizations and individual Christians surmounted obstacles to take goods into the survivors, helped them clean up their homes, cared for them, kept them company, prayed for them, … Some of the survivors are filled with appreciation, and are not calling them Ku-ri-su-cyan anymore, rather Ki-ri-su-to san!
Spiritual Awakening
There are over 7000 churches in Japan, but they are divided into more than 200 denominations and associations, each with their own theological perspective, with little dialogue between them. This lack of interaction is an enormous barrier to promoting the Gospel. A well-known evangelist once said, “Japan has earned its place in the world by exerting influence made possible through their strong collective nature and team spirit, that has led to many economic miracles. However, the Japanese church has taken the bait of Satan by delineating bulwarks around each denomination and association, leaving the already very small Japanese church merely able to survive, but unable to exert influence (in society).”
In the 1995 Kobe earthquake, 6000 died, convulsing Japanese society. However, only a few Christian organizations responded to the relief needs. In the aftermath of that disaster, Japan drew on its national power for rapid recovery. Half a year later, almost everything was back in place. Unfortunately, the state of the church had not changed one bit.
This past March, Japanese Christians embarked on many types of relief work in the disaster areas within a very short time. This time, there has been no division according to denomination or association, rather a joint effort to provide relief, assist the survivors to clean up their homes and yards. This is an incredible miracle for the Japanese church; it’s as if the tsunami flushed away the barriers between church, denominations and associations. We are all Christians; together we are His vessel to accompany the sufferers on this difficult stretch of road.
One Japanese pastor said that this is a spiritual awakening for the Japanese church. Who hasn’t yearned for a great spiritual revival in Japan. But revival must start with unity in God’s family; that will definitely bring spiritual influence with it!
Thanksgiving and Supplication
1.    Thanks to God! Elderly Mr. Sugawara said to us, “Though the tsunami was a thing that brought sorrow to us, becoming acquainted with you is a very happy thing.” Pastor Tanaka from the Miyagi Bible Church said, “This elderly man lived apart from the church for 20 years, never stepping a foot inside the building. This tsunami changed his perspective of Christians. Please pray for Mr. Sugawara, asking God to help him experience God’s grace and mercy through the actions of Christians.
2.    During May 22~25, I will go into the northeast disaster area. This time, I’m going with 2 co-workers from the Taiwan Chinese Christian Relief Association to visit Kesennuma, Shizugawa, Ishinomaki and Higashimatsuyam, and discuss plans for recovery with several Japanese pastors. These congregations have an average Sunday attendance of under 20 each. These pastors are already giving their utmost for the regular work of their congregations, so they are actually very terrified of the immense recovery effort. Please pray for pastors of Japanese churches, that God will increase their strength so they can run and not be weary.
3.    Please continue to pray for unity in the Japanese church.

"Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” (Mt. 5:16)
Lord! Use us, so that people may see Your Glory!
With you, working in Japan, Tina

The Chinese New Year celebration 07 again came to an end. This year the Christian Tribune published an article with a report of Christian churches who tried to combine the meaning of traditional artifacts like lanterns with the biblical message of Jesus as the true light of the world. – In addition those church members displayed self manufactured artifacts resembling angels, illuminated fruits, lamps etc. showing how different things become through the light shining from the inside. –This stands for a growing observation which is that more must be to change the lcoal culture in order to significantly make inroads in the local non-Christian culture and Taiwans non-Christians life.

- In the course of the annual planing it seems this year is going to be one with a stronger emphasis on large scale evangelism. – Most helpful in this account ist the decision of Operation Mobilisation to send the ship "DOULOS" with its teams to Taiwan’s three harbours Keelung, Taichung and Kaoshiung from March to June 07.
- As the Global Mission Center just has gathered all the officially available data of Christianity in Taiwan this move comes at a good moment and it seems there is more potential than ever before to link up with a maximum of willing churches for interesting evangelistic meetings from north to south. – Everything is still in the beginning, but if we manage to gather forces we could reach a significant number of new friends with the gospel.
- A group of 50 Chinese Christian Restaurant owners has arrived in Taiwan already and is going to work with local churches in North Taiwan in evangelistic outreaches among people whom due to their working timetable hardly ever can make it into a church. They plan to stay until March 20th. At the 16th they will have a special meeting at the House Church of Christ Taipei (10.-12.P.M.) to attract some of those invited workers to hear a special message.

Interfaith Cooperation for Life Education in Taiwan

Taiwan Church News 2870 26 February – 4 March 2007
Reported by Chiou Kuo-rong. Written by David Alexander
Taiwan’s Life Education Association recently held a 4-day,3-night training session for leaders of its high school level teaching programme. This year the event was hosted by Buddhist members of the association, and was held at the Sanhsia Golden Light Monastery in Taipei County. Association board member Shyu Mao-wei remarked that it was probably the first time in Taiwan’s history that Christian Hymns and prayers mingled with Buddhist chanting in such a setting.
The association has discovered that Taiwan’s Ministry of Education is most defensive and restrictive when it comes to the topic of religious education on, or entrance of people professionally identified with religious groups into, local campuses. To overcome some of this defensiveness the association has striven to present itself as an interfaith group. Ms. Shyu said, “We train people to use education about religion to help students understand what is genuine in faith, hoping to gradually bring an end to the rife superstition and unhealthy attitudes in our society. We hope that we can positively influence students in the areas of the meaning of life, values, recognition of the spiritual, and the improvement of physical, emotional and spiritual conditions to give greater stability for everyone.
During the first day of training, Professor Sun Shiaw-jyh from National Taiwan University’s department of philosophy addressed the assembly saying that human beings all have to answer the basic questions of why I am alive, how am I to live and what am I to live for. These questions form the basis of the new high school level curriculum of the Life Education Association. He sees religious education as particularly aimed at spiritual learning which is connected to body and mind as well.
The second day of the event began with an exposure to monastic life including the kneeling and kowtowing that unfamiliar to Roman Catholics and totally foreign to the Protestants. Lin Wei-ling, professor of Spiritual Life at Bread Of Life Theological Cllege, said that the ceremony was beautiful and a positive spiritual experience , but she also questioned the possibility of interfaith mixing and the problems inherent in such an endeavor. She clearly believes that there must be mutual respect of other participants, including the understanding of each other’s rights, but found herself on the defensive because though she knew the event would be held at a monastery, she was not made aware ahead of time of the exposure to its worship life. She had no complaints about the venue or the program, but felt overwhelmed by an atmosphere that on every side reminded her that she came from the outside. Reflecting on the disunity of Christians and churches in Taiwan, she said that of cooperation and unity do not become an aspect of Christian life, there is no way that churches will be able to compare with or compete with the “five star class of service” available through the Buddhists.
But even with these reservations, Ms. Lin will continue to participate in the Life Education Association because she agrees with its direction and goals. When asked if that may produce difficulties, she smiled and said, “It’s what I want to do.” She encourages churches to work together, participate in the association’s activities, and share the truth that is included in the life education curriculum with many people.
Protestant participation in this year’s workshop was lower than in previous such meetings. The Association’s executive secretary said that this was noticed even when registrations were coming in. The venue was the reason. Dr. Jospeh Lin, president of the Presbyterian Bible College at Hsin Chu, and a speaker at the training event for two years running, pointed out, “Protestants’ problem with participation in interfaith activities stems from their belief that all religions other than their own are in error.” Though the association has been established on an interfaith basis, it has not yet gone beyond creating a good space for sharing to get to the foundations where we can appreciate each other and truly cooperate.
Dr Lin says that, to date, interfaith dialogue in Taiwan has been on the basis of good neighborliness, and has not yet cone on to cooperative work. All Christian groups have these boundary issues. The experience of working together, experiencing each other, overcomes defensiveness. This needs to be transformed. Among Taiwan’s Protestants, he said, the Presbyterian Church to which he belongs has to eschew its self understanding as the ‘big brother’ and widen its circle of cooperation with other churches and other religions, coming to recognize and appreciate what is common to all and tearing down the walls that separate.
Ms. Lin from the Bread of Life Theological College expressed a desire that more people take part in the Life Education Association’s work. Dr. Lin from the Bible College said that the church has to take high school education seriously and recognize the contributions made by all religions and groups. “Buddhist truth can be very deep, and Buddhist organizations have a much greater influence on the government.” Buddhist participation in the Life Education Association and its curriculum is part of the context in which the churches must live out their witness in the high schools.

Thanks for joining us in Prayer for:
Thanks: We have had a good and much rewarding time of evangelism over Christmas. - Many new contacts and much fun with the kids. - Also at the German Christmas celebration Gods Spirit was present and quite a few new faces. Someone found the church through Alains posts on internet and told us how he was longing to attend this worship. What a testimony of Gods leading! - We stay in touch with him since then.
Tabea Koebele, our shorttermer frrom Germany, has joined us and is adjusting in her new environment. Pray for her 6 months time, her ministry among German kids and at our Chinese Church in shilin, Taipei, where she plans to go to Chinese schools and share her testimony, but also attend the young adult meeting at Saturday night. -
Thanks for Gods help while writing the numerous tests at the Sacred Music College (Rita), Except in one case she seems to have passed, however the final word will come after Chinese New Year. We know in one case she has to write a test again, because her teacher believes she can write a better score than she actually did. - Many of the singing times around Christmas left a deep impression on peoples heart about the love of God. Pray that this seed of faith bears eternal fruit.
Intercession:
The time of Chinese New Year festivities. For the many church members who will see their non-Christian family-members. May God bless their testimony of love.
For the teaching time at Taosheng Theological Seminary. May God bless these 11 students and give them diligence
For us as family: May God grant stamina and faithful walking in his promises.
In March 21 we will be founding the South Taiwan Mission council for the churches in the south of the island.
